Buying photography isn't much different than hiring any other contractor.

  1. First, look at samples of work.
  2. Look for examples that are similar to the type of items that you need shot. Try to see beyond the item and look at the surfaces like metal and glass.

  3. Second, ask for references.
  4. Not only do you need someone with the skills to take care of your project you need someone who is reasonable to work with and understands that photography is a service.

  5. Third, define the project and get a quote.
  6. This is the stage of the project where there is no substitute for experience. You need someone who can accurately assess your needs and create a plan that will meet your needs in a cost effective manner and help avoid problems.

Here is a list of questions that any new photographer should be asking before any work is started or even quoted.

  • How will the images be used? Are they for print, web or both?
  • Who is your clientele? Do you need simple straightforward shots on a white background or will your clients respond better to sophisticated backgrounds with subtle propping ?
  • What sort of volume do you have? Often the cost can come down dramatically by grouping similar items and backgrounds together to increase the efficiency of the production.
  • What are your time constraints? The most beautiful photography is useless if it is not to the printer on time.
  • What are your budget constraints? It doesn't make sense to create a spectacular (and expensive) image of a product that has a small profit margin. Be sure you are working with a photographer whose goal it is that you make more money from his photography than he does.

There are lots of photographers to choose from but choosing the wrong one can be a disaster for your company. When you choose Jeff Jones Photography you are hiring an experienced professional with the skill to create the images you need to sell your products.
